Our previous studies have shown that oculomotor learning is promoted under hyper-gravity environment in both goldfish and humans. This learning promotion was shown to occur during prism adaptation in humans, and oculomotor neural integrator (NI) adaptation in goldfish. An augmented gravitation input would significantly increase vestibular input to both the goldfish and human cerebellum. Thus, a working hypothesis for accelerated motor learning under hyper-gravity was envisioned to be an up-regulated Purkinje cell activity enabling more efficient modification of synaptic efficacy. If so, it should be promoted motor learning by causing steadily increased Purkinje cell activity by different stimuli. DC firing rate of Purkinje cells has been shown to become high in light than in dark. Presently we carried out the NI adaptation using two types of visual stimuli to induce motor learning in goldfish. Either white spots were displayed as a stimulus on a black background (Darker) or black spots on white background (Brighter). We compared the learning curves of NI adaptation. Accelerating effect was found in NI behavior with the Brighter than the Darker visual stimulus. This finding supports the hypothesis that Purkinje cell up-regulation alone may produce more efficient changes in synaptic efficacy contributing to the neural basis of motor learning. |
