Projector-based Augmented Reality for Portable Medical Assistance System

(in English) Augmented Reality (AR) technique has supported surgeons to detect anatomical targets. However, the conventional AR system has been too complex and strenuous to be used by surgeons. It has to register between the CT data and real space to project targets accurately. In this study, we developed a projector-based augmented reality assistance system (PARAS) which can project the targets automatically by detecting a tracking object. The tracking object is detected to estimate the device’s position, and the relation between the targets and the projector is updated in real-time. PARAS enables surgeons to use the AR system easily even without prior training. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed system, experiments, which the subjects puncture a needle to invisible targets, were conducted. The mean error between puncture line and the target in 100mm deep was 13.9mm. Subjective evaluation of PARAS showed no difference in comparison with the similar system equipped with a head mounted display (HMD). Therefore, PARAS is expected to be easy and accurate AR system used for surgery.
