Perceptual latency of sensory stimuli is changed with motor-auditory but not with motor-visual temporal recalibration

(in English) Perception of synchrony between one's own action and its sensory feedback can be recalibrated after exposure to an induced delay (temporal recalibration: TR). TR might be obtained by a motor shift (change in motor execution timing) and/or a sensory shift (change in peceptual latency). We examined whether perceptual latency changes with a shift of subjective synchrony. Participants were exposed to a delayed visual or auditory feedback after voluntary action, and then did a synchronous tapping (ST) task (to measure subjective synchrony) and a simple reaction time (SRT) task (to measure latency shifts). For auditory stimuli, SRT became significantly shorter by 6.5 ms after exposure to motor-auditory (MA) delays. This auditory speed-up was accompanied by 33.4 ms shift of the point of subjective simultaneity (PSS) in the MA-ST task. Exposure to visually-delayed stimuli did not change visual SRT (< 0.1 ms), though the MV tap-asynchrony was significantly shifted by 16.3 ms. These results suggest that the MA-TR is more potent than MV-TR and that shifts in perceptual latency can partly account for adaptation to temporal delays.
