The effect of arm movement on the formation of haptic peri-personal spatial representation

(in English) The present study examined the characteristics of haptic spatial representations of objects in the surrounding environment. It is currently known that haptic perception of orientation is non-veridical showing systematic deviations caused by the egocentric reference frame with its egocenter on the hand. However, little is known about the haptic perception of object-to-object relations. The present study, using a layout reproduction task, investigated the characteristics of haptic spatial representations formed from arm movement. Results showed systematic deviations in the reproduction of layouts on the right side of the body and on the left side of the body but not the front. The magnitude of the deviation was highly affected by the direction of arm movement. This shows that arm movement plays a key role in the formation of haptic spatial representations of object relations, suggesting that the egocenter of the egocentric reference frame may not lie on the hand
