Verbal processing affects motion perception. However, it has been unclear whether onomatopoeia processing also affects visual motion perception, and whether the effect depends on information integration based on asynchrony between onomatopoeia and visual motion stimulus. In this study, we examined whether onomatopoeia presented visually (experiment 1) or auditorily (experiment 2) affects visual motion perception of a bistable stimulus, i.e., stream/bounce display (SBD). We also investigated whether the effect of onomatopoeia changed by stimulus asynchrony. Three conditions of onomatopoeia (“Gatsu” (associate with bounce) / ”Syu” (associate with stream / “Heyu” as a control stimuli) and four conditions of time lag (-500ms / -100ms / +100ms / +500ms from coincidence of disks) were designed. Observer’s task was to report the type of perceived motion (stream or bounce). The results showed that the proportion of “stream” was significantly higher in “Syu” and the proportion of “bounce” was significantly higher in “Gatsu”, regardless of the presentation modality. The results also suggest that the effect of “Gatsu” was significant at -500ms condition and was the strongest in -100ms condition. However, “Syu” and “Heyu” were not significant at any time lags. These results indicate that visual and auditory processing of onomatopoeia affects visual motion perception, and the effect depends on information integration based on asymmetric temporal proximity. |
