In a previous workload study, we found the characteristic Input-Output (IO) concentration to be ap-
proximately several GBs in size and to continue for 2-3 minutes before moving on to the neighboring area. Moreover,
this IO concentration mostly appeared on the arbitrary offset. Therefore, conventional tiering is not sufficient for
this IO concentration because the tiering moves data on a daily basis according to statistical information. Caching
is also not sufficient due to the large amount of write-back traffic. The on-the-fly automated storage tiering (OTF-
AST) system dynamically migrates this IO concentration from the hard disk drive (HDD) to the solid-state drive
(SSD). However, the OTF-AST system cannot effectively handle previously studied IO concentrations because they
result in many short-time migrations and the system slows down. Therefore, we developed an OTF-AST system with
proactive and observational migration features. This system dynamically migrates the IO concentration to the SSD
and the proactive migration feature migrates the candidate IO concentration to an area that will become the area of
IO concentration in the near future. The proactive migration feature can improve IO concentration with short-time
migration. Moreover, the observational migration feature recognizes HDD overhead by checking user IO response
time and migrates the IO concentration from where it already finished, to the HDD when the HDD overhead is low.
Experimental results showed that our proposed system exhibited a faster average response time that is 46.9% faster
than that of FACEBOOK FlashCache for one of the Microsoft Research Cambridge workloads. |
