This talk refers to conventional text-based Information Retrieval (IR) as Taciturn Search, and to IR that considers speech in search space as Loquacious Search. This talk then aims to identify the characteristics of the former search paradigm and its limitations, and to discuss promising benefits of the latter search paradigm to overcome some of the limitations. First, I provide an overview of Information Searching Behaviour Models such as Broder’s Web Search Taxonomy, Work Task and Search Task, Dervin’s Sense Making Approach, and Belkin’s Anomalous State of Knowledge. Here, I discuss that existing IR systems often assume a user’s explicit querying behaviour as inputs, the reasons why it is difficult to express information needs accurately, and finally, that query formulation has significant impact on retrieval effectiveness. Second, I introduce and discuss Collaborative Search (search conducted by multiple users for a common informational goal) as a form of Loquacious Search. I show that collaborative search can reduce redundancy in a pool of relevant documents found, when compared to aggregation of single searchers, but there is a tradeoff between the cost of communication and retrieval effectiveness. Also, I show that most conversations occurred in collaborative search are about work task, and suggest that such conversations can be a great source for mining potential information needs of users. Based on these discussions, I finally present the framework of Search Engine That Listens (SETL) which is designed to leverage speed data in search space. I discuss SETL’s objectives, and enabling technologies and future research directions to achieve the proposed framework. |
