(in English) The current wave of globalization aided by ubiquitous computing and the worldwide literacy diffusion places much demand on people to have communication skills. It has been a while since professionals in science and technology, in particular, are expected to have effective communication skills using English as a global lingua franca (EGLF). A practical model of the use of EGLF or its possible definition, however, has not yet been presented in related fields. This paper characterizes linguistic challenges people are forced to face in these days the Modern-day Tower of Babel. Functions of an EGLF are also discussed, which may possibly lead people to acquiring effective language performance skills in the globalized era.
