The purpose of this study is to examine whether the cognitive load placed when writing on paper notebooks differs from that placed when writing on tablet devices. Previous studies have shown the superiority of paper in reading, learning, and writing. However, the effects on cognitive processes of writing on paper or tablet devices have not been examined. Twelve high-school students participated in an experiment in which they were asked to perform note-taking tasks on paper or on a tablet device while listening to scientific lessons. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded from 14 scalp sites using a portable device. The results showed that the power of the frontal theta activity (4-7 Hz) during the note-taking tasks was higher in the tablet device condition than in the paper condition. Compared with writing on paper notebooks, writing on tablet devices may require more cognitive effort to monitor and check handwriting and distract from attention that should be allocated to the processing of content learning. |
