Footsteps illusion in 3D and individual differences in stereoscopic vision

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The footsteps illusion (FI) is a phenomenon in which a pair of dark- and light-gray rectangles moving at constant speed in the same direction appear to shuffle as they cross a background of black and white stripes. We hypothesize that FI is caused by the suppression of contour information of the rectangles. We compare the delay to FI onset in a 2D condition (i.e., contours suppressed by contrast diminishment) and in a 3D condition (i.e., subjective contours are enhanced by adding disparity to the vertical edges of the rectangles) when viewing by the central or peripheral vision. First, subjects are examined to determine if they could correctly perceive the disparities in a dynamic environment by using a series of stimuli. Unexpectedly, the percentage of subjects who were able to perceive all stimuli correctly was less than half. The FI onset delays of the subjects in the correct-perception group are tested. The average delay until FI was perceived in the 3D-central-vision condition was significantly increased compared with that in the other conditions. The results support our hypothesis.
