Bone is mainly composed of collagen and minerals such as hydroxyapatite (HAp). In order to evaluate bone strength, it is important to know not only bone mineral destiny (BMD) but also bone quality such as microstructure and anisotropy. However, there are just a few studies on the anisotropic elasticity characterization of bone by the ultrasonic wave velocity measurements. In this study, we have investigated the velocity anisotropy in the minute area of cortical bone using a micro-Brillouin scattering technique. Especially, we focused on the effect of collagen on the velocity anisotropy. Before decalcification, the anisotropy was around 4%. After decalcification, the wave velocities decreased and the anisotropy increased up to 12% or more. In the decalcified specimens, Wave velocities decreased due to the advanced glycation end products (AGEs). The results showed the strong contribution of collagen to the elastic properties in the small part of bone. |
