A Novel Distance Set as a Shape Descriptor

(in English) The distance set is well-known in shape matching as a versatile local descriptor of shape.
This is easy to construct because it consists of ordinary distances between sample points on a shape.
Moreover, it is invariant under isometric operations and remains unaffected by whether a shape is represented with an ordered set of points or an unordered set.
However, there is a tradeoff between performance and computational feasibility in matching with the distance sets.
The aim of this paper is to give a new descriptor that provides a more efficient matching in terms of computer algorithms.
In fact, our descriptor is also a set of ordinary distances, and the difference between the distance set and our descriptor lies only in the choice and order of the distances.
We show that, although our descriptor runs more quickly, it is equivalent to the distance set in terms of shape retrieval.
