This paper proposes a fast initial cell search method based on two-step frequency offset estimation for a small cell for Long Term Evolution (LTE) heterogeneous networks. In the 1st step of the proposed cell search method, a set of user equipment (UE) first estimates a frequency offset based on a partial correlation of primary synchronization signal (PSS) from a macrocell and computes the frequency offset of a received PSS for a small cell assuming the same frequency error of a temperature compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) of a UE. The UE detects the PSS received timing from the maximum PSS correlation after compensating the coarse frequency offset for the small cell. In the 2nd step, the UE estimates the residual frequency offset by using the partial correlation of the PSS from the small cell and updates the frequency offset by adding the estimated residual frequency offset to the estimated one in the 1st step. System-level simulation results show that by using the cell search method, the initial cell search time to achieve the cell ID detection probability of 95 % is within approximately 100 ms for the carrier frequency of a small cell up to 19 GHz or 21 GHz assuming the frequency error of 3 ppm or 1 ppm for a TCXO of a UE. |
