We have proposed an array antenna with radiation pattern reconfigurable elements. Though a grating lobe arises due to sparse antenna spacing, the element radiation pattern suppresses it and gain on the desired direction can be improved. As the element antenna, three-element Yagi-Uda antenna is adopted. Two symmetrical radiation patterns are created by PIN diodes on the parasitic elements. In early work, we fabricated four-element array and demonstrated the generation of two radiation patterns. However reflection and boresight gain were not sufficient. In this paper, we improve these issues and design a large scale planar array antenna. Additionally, compared with basic array antenna without the radiation pattern reconfigurable feature, gain improvement of the proposed antenna is shown by calculation. We fabricated the 48-elemnt array antenna and demonstrate two symmetrical radiation patterns yielding high gain across wide scanning angle. |
