We proposed and demonstrated all-fiber single-channel bandpass filters that employed a high attenuation metal-doped fiber spliced between two long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs). The grating periods of the LPFGs written in dissimilar fibers were adjusted so as to match the resonance wavelengths of only one pair of the same order cladding modes and also avoid matching those of other pairs. The first LPFG couples the resonant core mode to the cladding mode, and the coupled cladding mode passes through the attenuation fiber with low loss. The second LPFG changes the resonant coupled cladding mode back to the core mode, and a single-channel passband appears. However the non-resonant coupled cladding modes go through the second LPFG, and are absorbed by the coating, and the stopbands are produced. On the other hand, the non-resonant core mode passing through the first LPFG is absorbed by the attenuation fiber, and the stopbands are formed. LPFGs were written in three single-mode fibers with relative index difference of about 2 ~ 2.5, 0.8, and 0.46 %. Their grating periods were adjusted so that the resonance wavelengths of the LP04 modes agreed with each other, and a single-channel bandpass filter was constructed by splicing the two LPFGs and the attenuation fiber. The insertion loss and the full-width at half-maximum bandwidth of the passband were 6.6 dB and 4.7 nm, 6.9 dB and 6.4 nm, and 7.9 dB and 7.1 nm, respectively. |
