Ab initio calculations of field emission from carbon emitters on the basis of time-dependent density functional theory (I)

(in English) To clarify the origin of the superior field emission characteristics of carbon emitters, we have been investigating the emission mechanism by the ab initio simulations. We introduced the time-dependent density functional theory method for calculating the field emission of carbon nanotubes. The simulations indicate that (1) from the potential distribution, the work function of the open ended (5,5) carbon nanotube decreases 0.9 eV upon hydrogen termination, (2) from the charge density distributions, something like electron bunches are observed. However, the simulations also produced unexpected results, such as the slope of F-N plots is too small. The problem of F-N plots was solved by improving the input method of the external field.
