Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) It has been long believed that intracortical microstimulation to the visual cortex can be one of the methods that artificially induce a certain level of visual sensation for people with a severe visual impairment. However, the visual perception and neural responses in the visual cortex induced by multi-site microstimulation remain little understood. On the other hand, a number of wireless multi-channel stimulation systems have been proposed for use in neural prostheses. Recently, also our group constructed a multi-channel stimulator VLSI chip that can generate current pulse stimulus in 64 channels. Therefore, in this study, we verified the validity of this stimulator chip in the performance of current injections, and of inducing neural responses, with using a multi-channel electrode inserted in the primary visual cortex of anesthetized rats in vivo.
