PAPR Reduction of Optical SSB Modulated Signal using LN Modulator Nonlinearity-based Peak Folding

(in English) Optical single sideband (SSB) modulation employs one-half of the spectrum bandwidth compared to that of intensity modulation. Due to the narrow bandwidth, optical SSB signal is tolerant to group velocity dispersion (GVD) and GVD of optical SSB signal can be compensated in electrical domain. However peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of carrier suppressed optical SSB (SSB-SC) signal becomes high because of the Hilbert-transformed signal component. High PAPR of optical SSB-SC signal causes nonlinear phase shifts by self-phase modulation (SPM) during the transmission and results a degraded signal at the receiver. We propose a simple technique to reduce PAPR of optical SSB-SC signal using peak folding. Nonlinear modulation curve of LN modulator was used to fold the peaks of Hilbert-transformed signal. PAPR of optical SSB-SC signal was reduced from 4.26 to 1.52 by using peak folding. As a result of PAPR reduction, SPM threshold of the studied system was improved by 3 dB.
