In this paper, we discuss a method for fiber tracking from micro CT volumes by using structure tensor analysis. In the proposed method, trackings are started from initial points placed in a grid pattern. Based on the assumption that the eigenvector corresponding to the smallest eigenvalue computed of the structure tensor would represent the fiber direction, we track both positive and negative fiber directions. For preventing sharp turns, if the direction of eigenvector corresponding to the smallest eigenvalue is quite different from the direction vector of the previous step, the tracking keep the same direction as the previous one. When the tracking length exceeds a threshold, or the tracking goes into the region far brighter or darker than the target region, the tracking is terminated. Although myofibre was successfully tracked in an experiment which used a myocardial specimen, not the myofibre but the surface of the target region was tracked by following the intensity gradients of the surface. As an additional experiment, we made a mask manually and utilized it for limiting the region used for structure tensor analysis. The mistracking was overcome, and the better tracking results were obtained. |
