A study on roll-off factor of Nyquist-PAM4 optical signaling using transmission simulation and estimation of DSP circuit size

(in English) Nyquist spectral shaping is an attractive technique to generate high-speed signals in using band-limited devices, however it is well-known that decrease of roll-off factor for reduction of its signal bandwidth greatly impacts on not only its performance such as optical modulation amplitude but also circuit size of digital signal processing (DSP). In this paper, we numerically investigate the relationship between roll-off factor and transmission performance using optical PAM4 (Pulse Amplitude Modulation) transceiver with/without Nyquist spectral shaping. In addition, we show estimation of DSP circuit in Nyquist-PAM4 transceiver using roll-off factor 0.1 and confirm the possibility to implement on a compact transceiver.
