Many Internet services today are provided by feature-rich applications,
each having certain networking and computation requirements, such as
network resource selection, and parallel computing. However, because of
the limits of modern networking, applications must rely on sophisticated
end systems in order to satisfy these requirements. This paper introduces a novel network architecture employing an
application-oriented gateway, utilizing SDN and NFV, that connects edge
networks to a core implementing virtualized network slices. We show how
this gateway helps enhance applications' capabilities by allowing
installation of custom service-oriented programs on both data-plane and
control-plane, thus giving applications more flexibility over their
requirements. |
