Development of spout-lever device for learning of lever operation by mice

(in English) The spout-lever device is an operant conditioning device for rats. The device is composed of a movable lever and a spout providing a drop of water as a reward when the lever is operated properly by the forelimb of the animal. It has been reported that by using this device rats can learn an operant conditioning behavior in a short term even if the animal were under head-fixed condition. In this study, we developed a spout-lever device and training program for mice based on those reports. It is shown that the developed device worked properly. In addition, even if the mice are under head-fixed condition, the mice become to show voluntary lever-pulling behavior within five days. These results indicate the usability of the developed device.
