TCP Behavior-based Slow DoS Attack Detection

(in English) In this paper, we discuss the detection of a form of DoS/DDoS attack known as Slow DoS.
Currently, countermeasures against Slow DoS attacks involve limiting the number of concurrent client connections allowed per unique IP,
the length of each connection, or both.
These measures, however, can either cause overblocking or be avoided through configuration settings on attack tools.
Here, we propose a method of detecting Slow DoS attacks through one of their known properties, the distinct behavior of TCP during an attack, by studying information extracted from TCP headers.
Through testing, we have observed the superiority of this method in terms of fewer false positives.
In addition, we also discuss its advatnages through a comparison of sensitivity of trade-off involved in working around each countermeasure.
