Museum Fatigue Effect: temporal changes in viewing time and evaluation in art appreciation
Jan Mikuni, Hideaki Kawabata (Keio Univ.) HIP2015-93
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) When people appreciate art works in museum exhibition, the appreciating time for each of artworks gradually decrease as a function of serial position. This phenomenon is called “Museum Fatigue Effect”. As factors this effect is occured, it has been postulated the existence of two aspects : the psychical and mental exhaustion. In the present study, we investigated the determinant of Museum Fatigue, which is caused by mental exhaustion, and the controllability of Museum Fatigue. In Experiment 1, we examined whether Museum Fatigue Effect could occur in laboratory situation. In Experiment 2, we examined whether Museum Fatigue Effect could be prevented from manipulating the order of exhibition of artworks. Results indicated that appreciation time gradually decrease as a function of the exhibition order, showing that Museum Fatigue can be observed even in laboratory situation. Furthermore, the decrease of appreciation time depends on the contexts to be exhibited. We discuss the determinant of Museum Fatigue in respect to the temporal aspects of appreciation time and evaluation in the experimental exhibition.
