Effects of animal-looking food decoration on visual preference of a food

(in English) Information into sensory modalities other than gustation and olfaction contributes to food perception. Visual and auditory information, through cross-modal interaction, also influence the impression of foods. Many food products have an animal-looking food decoration. In the present study, we investigated how the animal-looking food decoration influences the food perception. We made pictures of a chocolate, a fish sausage, and a Squid Sushi, which were decorated by various modulatory pictures of animals. The pictures were either realistic or cartoony, which was made using morphing technic. The results showed that (1) the decoration on a fish sausage and Squid Sushi drastically decreased the food likability, (2) the appropriate animal for the food decoration depended on the category of a food, (3) the realistic modulatory pictures with strong animacy decreased to the larger extent that the cartoony modulatory pictures, and (4) the edibility of the modulatory foods did not correlate with the edibility of the decorated food. These results would provide novel aspects of visual effect in food perception.
