Evaluation of user's communication abilities through a log-data analysis of versatile communication aid VCAN/3A

(in English) In communication support of persons with communication disabilities using versatile voice-output communication aid VCAN that we developed, supporters determine specifications of user's VCAN from his or her educational objectives and update it according to development. User's communication ability has been evaluated by a means of language tests, which have several limitations such as the discrepancy between test results and daily observations and subjectivity. Then we developed a language ability evaluation support system using log data of VCAN that is history of user's operation in daily life in the previous study. In order to clarify the relationship between our system and conventional language tests, we carried out experiments using 5 subjects with different communication disabilities. We analyzed subject's three-month log and compared its results with the written contents of entry columns of the S-S test developed by the National Rehabilitation Center of Japan. In addition, we investigated the using frequency and history of VCAN by means of a time series analysis of the log. All results suggested that the log data analysis and time series analysis are effective for complementing and reinforcing the S-S test, and evaluating the establishment level of daily communication support, respectively.
