Since 2008, we have been operating an ad-hoc sensor network system in Shiojiri City, Nagano, Japan. This system sends sensor data to a data collection server by way of solar powered transponders which are in fixed locations around the city. To reduce implementation costs, the transponders are attached to city street mirrors, so the transponders are positioned at relatively low heights above the ground. Therefore, transmission is often blocked by trucks stopped in front the mirrors. To ensure that data is not lost, routing of data packets is changed dynamically, but alternate routes to the server must exist for routing changes to be effective. In this paper, we use graph theory to analyze the network topology to find transponders with no alternate routes. Based on this analysis, we develop and evaluate a system to suggest places where transponders should be added so that all transponders have alternate routes to the server. |
