Measuring Semantic Similarity between Concepts based on Iterative Estimation of Image Reliability

(in English) Recently, methods for inter-concept similarity measurement (ICSM) have been actively studied.
Especially, ICSM methods using a large number of web-images annotated with text-tags have attracted many researchers' attention, because of the advantage that they can handle diverse concepts.
However, most of the image-based ICSM methods suffer from the problem of ``junk images'', which have several tags unrelated to the image content.
It is important to for achieving a good ICSM method to remove the junk images.
On the other hand, methods of junk image removal from a set of web-images have also been studied widely. Some of them are based on the semantic relationships between text-tags.
This indicates that ICSM and junk image removal can complement each other. Based on this notion, in this paper, we introduce ``image reliability'', which quantifies how likely the image is non-junk image, and propose a novel ICSM method that iteratively performs the following two steps: (a) estimating image reliability for each image using a result of ICSM and (b) measuring inter-concept similarity based on the estimated image reliability.
Experimental results show the superiority of our method over the non-iterative method of junk image removal.
