Analysis of perturbation relationship between the vocal-tract shape and formant frequencies

(in English) Based on the nonlinear relationship between the vocal-tract shape and formant frequencies,
their perturbation relationship was analyzed for Japanese vowels. First, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) was used to scan the vocal tract of 10 male speakers in three dimensions. Cross-sectional area function data were then calculated from MR images. In addition, a principal component analysis was performed to extract dominant deformation patters of the vocal-tract. A perturbation analysis was performed for each vowel by calculating the change in formant frequencies due to a change in the first and second mode functions from the mean vocal-tract shape of 10 speakers. As a result, we found an acoustically insensitive region in which the formant change was small for the deformation of the vocal-tract shape.
