Characterization of a Tunable Circularly Polarized Microstrip Antenna With Varactor Diodes

(in English) In this paper, characterization of a tunable circularly polarized microstrip antenna which employs varactor diodes is presented. The varactor diodes are loaded along a patch element in order to achieve a frequency tunability. In addition, as the patch element is excited by two orthogonal signals with the same amplitude and 90-deg. phase difference, the proposed antenna radiates a circularly polarized wave. In the design, the antenna’s input-impedance variation due to the capacitance change of the varactor diodes is minimized by using a parasitic element to improve the impedance matching between the antenna element and 90-deg. hybrid in a wide frequency range. Circularly polarized radiation at the tuning frequency is experimentally confirmed.
