Real time detection of bleeding region for building a hemostasis support system in laparoscopic surgery

(in English) Laparoscopic surgery can reduce the size of a surgical wound and lead to faster recovery. It is difficult, however, to find bleeding points because of lower visibility due to the bleeding and the narrow field of view in the laparoscope. We propose a method for hemostasis support in laparoscopic surgery using highlighting of blood regions and presenting bleeding frames in laparoscopic images. We aim to develop a hemostasis support system that can detect bleeding regions and present their laparoscopic image frames to surgeons. In this paper, we propose a bleeding detection method based on a machine learning technique. Three feature amounts are calculated from RGB value and HSV value at each pixel and the pixel is classified as either a bleeding pixel or a non-bleeding pixel by a support vector machine (SVM) in real time. When the proposed method was applied to the five laparoscopic motion pictures, more than 95% accuracy was achieved. Processing time was 5 - 10 ms/frame.
