A technique to overcome delay spikes for unmanned vehicle control over mobile networks

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) vehicles (UVs) are expected to be useful tools in various fields, and their applications are widely spreading to diverse areas. Remote-controlled UVs need reliable and small delay communication links for transmitting various signals between the UVs and control stations. We think that a mobile network, which is widely available for mobile phone communications with an affordable cost, is a potential candidate to provide such a communication link. To realize it, we have to overcome degradation in communication quality of IP packet transmissions over a mobile network. We focus on video signal transmission from a UV to a control station. Video transmission quality suffers degradation by both transmission delay and loss of IP packets. Especially, delay spikes which often occur in mobile networks significantly disturb UV controls. Because a delay spike causes freeze of the moving video by interrupting continuous transmission of IP packets of a video signal. In this paper, we propose a technique to overcome delay spikes. The technique uses multiple mobile networks and adaptively switches a video stream from a mobile network to other one. We carried out video transmission experiments using two real LTE networks. Our result shows effectiveness of the proposal to reduce of freezing frequency of a video.
