Variable Gain Design of PI Controller with Anti-Windup Technique for ONU Sleep Control

(in English) The development of next-generation passive optical networks (PONs) is promoted through the spread of broadband access services. In addition, the increase in the power consumption of optical access network systems becomes an important issue. Power-saving techniques for the PON remain important in future networks, and their effects on quality of services (QoS) should be considered. We have proposed optical network unit (ONU) sleep control on the basis of feedback control theory using a proportional-integral (PI) controller and an anti-windup technique for stabilizing downstream queueing delays. We showed that variable control gains could improve the tracking performance with respect to QoS. In our previous researches, however, the design of the variable control gains has not been discussed sufficiently. This report discusses the design strategy of variable control gains for ONU sleep control. Simulations confirm that the proposed PI controller with variable gains provides better performance than the conventional PI controller with fixed gains.
