We elucidated the mechanism by which the microalgae Chaetoceros sp. and Chaetoceros gracilis were destroyed by ultrasonic cavitation in water at 20 kHz, 400 kHz, 1.0 MHz, 2.4 MHz, 3.4 MHz, or 4.4 MHz. The cell count, absorbance, and particle size distribution were measured. The change in the number of cells, absorption, and particle diameter depended on the frequency. In addition, at high frequencies of 1.0 and 2.4 MHz, the decrease in the number of cells reached its maximum and the particle diameter changed substantially. We conclude that particle size and cavitation bubble size are related. |
