Proposal on Link Control Method over 920MHz Wireless Communication for M2M Gateways

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) M2M(Machine to Machine) gateways (GW) have been spreading recently to collect usage of power and gas from each home. A cellular device including LTE is attached to these GWs to send the usage data to a server. Since the number of links to a base stations is limited due to the wireless resource constraint, reducing the number of simultaneous links from GWs to a base station is one of challenges towards the future mobile network. In some existing method, a gaweway sends data to another GW in order to reduce the number of cellular links. The 920MHz frequency band which has long communication range more than several hundred meters is one of promising bands for GWs to communicate each other. Meanwhile, ARIB(Association of Radio Industries and Businesses) has imposed a regulation on transmission time over 920MHz that must be less than 360 seconds every hour. However, the existing methods do not consider this regulation so some GWs are not always able to communicate with other GWs.As a solution to this, we propose a new method to control the number of links from GWs to a base station. Of all GWs, the method determines a set of GWs that should have links to a base stations, taking into account of the transmission time regulation. We conducted simulation studies and the results show the proposed method reduces the number of links by about 70%, when contrasted with each GW sending data to the server. The proposed method will be effective to accommodate increased GWs by 2020 with current facilities.
