We have proposed a `pre-equalizing electro-optic (EO) modulator', which can convert high speed electrical signals to optical signals and can compensate for optical fiber dispersion effect at the same time. The proposed EO modulator has polarizaton-reversed structures with a traveling-wave electrode under a velocity mismatched condition. The impulse response of this EO modulator becomes a real function corresponding to the polarization reversal pattern itself. By utilizing this characteristic, it is possible to obtain the impulse response for pre-equalization easily. This device can operate in the high frequency range over 100 GHz since it is based on the Pockels effect caused by electronic nonlinear polarizations. Therefore, it is applicable to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) communication systems. In this paper, the analysis and design for an extension of a fiber length and for improvement of compensation characteristics considering a modulation electrode loss are reported. |
