Under the communication such as satellite-to-ground optical communications where the reasonable restriction on an eavesdropper can be assumed, the security exploiting the physical property of wireless medium, namely physical layer security, is gaining much attention as an effective means to enhance security of the transmission channel. In this paper, we report the field experiment towards the realization of physical layer security in free-space optical communications. Using the experimental data from the 7.8 km free-space optical communication testbed between NICT and UEC, we evaluate the achievable secrecy rate and investigate the effect of atmospheric turbulences on the secrecy rate. After then, we discuss the feasibility of physical layer security in free-space optical communications. |
