Relationship between Hypoalbuminemia, Average length of Hospitalization and Comorbidity

(in English) It has been suggested that low albumin levels lead to edema, muscle atrophy, osteopenia and weakened immunity, leading to an increased susceptibility to infection.
The aim of this study was to investigate the existence of any correlations between albumin levels, average length of hospitalization and Charlson comorbidity index. Patients were those whose albumin levels were measured on hospitalization in the Okinawa Hokubu Prefectural Hospital. Albumin categorization levels were set at 3.6 or above, 3.5 to 3.0, 2.9 to 2.5, and 2.4 or below.
An inverse correlation between albumin levels and the average length of stay was confirmed. We also examined the Charlson comorbidity index, and found the frequent simultaneous presence of cardiac disease, liver disease, and renal disease.
