Long sleep time improve heart rate variability in patients with mild hypertension and/or the initial stage of heart failure
Natsuki Nakayama (Chubu Univ.) MICT2015-56
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Several prior studies have considered sleep to be involved in the prognosis of cardiovascular diseases. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of sleep time on heart rate variability (HRV) in sleep periods and to clarify relationships between sleep time and sympathovagal balance. Sleep time and HRV were measured by Holter ECG. Heart rate (HR), low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF) and LF/HF were expressed as average values. HRV parameters were calculated 1 hour after sleep onset (1After), 3 hours after sleep onset (3After) and 1 hour before awakening (1Awake). The sleep times for 25 patients were longer than the average sleep time of the study participants. Their parasympathetic activities were significantly higher compared to patients with lower-than-average sleep times.
