A thin metamaterial absorber is used as a sensor array to measure the 2-d power and phase distributions of a radio-frequency (a few GHz) wave incident and absorbed on its surface. The absorber is designed as a metasurface having a dense array of mushroom-type square patches formed on a grounded substrate. Lumped resistors inserted between the surface patches arranged in the row (x) and column (y) directions absorb incident x- and y-polarizations, respectively, at the resonance frequency of the metasurface. As the voltage induced on each resistor is proportional to the incident electric field component along it, the amplitude (power) and phase distributions of the incident wave are obtained by monitoring the voltages on the 2-d array of resistors. The effectiveness of the technique is evaluated by fabricating a system for measuring power and phase distributions of a wave incident on a metamaterial absorber. |
