This lecture introduces thermoacoustic oscillations of a gas in contact with a solid wall subject to temperature gradient. Emergence of the oscillations is brought about by instability of the gas under a combined action of resonance of the system. Typical examples are given of standing waves in a closed tube, and of progressive waves in a looped tube. Physical mechanisms of the instability caused by diffusion due to viscosity and thermal conductivity of the gas oscillating in a stack or a regenerator are expounded from Lagrangian viewpoint by using a thermodynamic cycle of a gas particle and also from Eulerian viewpoint of instability of a heat flow in a quiescent state. Mechanisms of the ensuing self-excited oscillations are also discussed briefly. |
