[Invited Talk] Data Compression for Computing Functions -- An Approach from a Dichotomy of Functions --

(in English) Let us consider the problem of computing a function of several data
which are observed separately. A naive scheme is to compute the
function after gathering all the data in one place. In general,
however, we do not need communicate all the data to perform the
computation; i.e., the communication rate can be reduced when the task
is to compute a function rather than to communicate the data themselves.
Nevertheless, it is known that the communication rate cannot be improved
under some conditions. In this talk, studies which focus the attention
on the condition, under which the communication rate cannot be improved
even if the task is computing, are reviewed.
