Effects of multi-mode interference on photon number states

(in English) A discrete Fourier transformation (DFT) of optical modes uniformly distributes a single photon over the modes, and forms a new basis of photon states. After the DFT, input from multiple single photon sources produce characteristic interference patterns in the output photon number distribution. We show that these patterns exhibit simple symmetries, e.g. translational symmetry. The dynamics of DFT of photon number states can therefore be described by the corresponding symmetry groups, which have lower dimension than the original photon number Fock space.
