Gradient Norm-based Histogram Equalization Considering Color Space

(in English) In this report, a new color image contrast enhancement method, which realizes a natural image enhancement by considering color space shape, is proposed. In the proposed method, the natural contrast enhancement is achieved by a gradient norm-based histogram equalization. Furthermore, in order to prevent unnatural enhancement, the distribution of the intensity component in the color space is considered. Concretely, at first, the gradient norm-based weighted histogram of the intensity component is calculated. Then a mixed histogram and its cumulative histogram are calculated by using the weighted histogram and an ideal intensity histogram. Finally, an output intensity is calculated based on the mixed cumulative histogram. In the experiment, the resultant images are evaluated subjectively and objectively, and the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified.
