Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Learning of writing Kanji characters of Chinese origin is still one of the important subjects in elementary education. This paper presents stroke order evaluation methods for Kanji characters written on a tablet. So far several methods and systems have been proposed to learn how to write Kanji characters neatly with correct stroke order according to the government guidelines for education but the correctness of stroke order evaluation is still to be improved. Here, we propose methods employing shape context feature around each feature point. For extracting shape context feature, we consider not only a conventional method that extracts the distribution of feature points around a focused feature point in fan-shaped areas divided by concentric circles and several directional angles but also a method that extracts directional features around a focused feature point in square areas divided by horizontal and vertical grids. We also consider them with applying the Gauss function. We call this group of variations feature point distribution evaluation method. The methods can evaluate stroke order in real-time when a learner writes strokes one by one. Evaluation of the method shows the feature point evaluation method with square areas and the Gauss function correctly evaluates stroke order by 98.5% with the maximum time of 0.9 sec.
