Energy-Efficient Random Sleep Protocol based on Distributed Coding for Sensor-to-Vehicular Communications

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We focus on sensor-to-vehicular communications and propose a emph{random sleep protocol based on distributed coding} (RSDC) which realizes highly efficient information delivery systems. In RSDC, sensor nodes share their information prior to the transmission and individually encode it. Then, every sensor node decides to either sleep or transmit its own codeword based on the given sleep probability. At the receiver side, untransmitted codewords can be seen as emph{erasure}. Using appropriate erasure correcting codes for the equivalent erasure channels, the receiver can correctly retrieve the whole information. In this paper, Luby transform (LT) codes are employed as erasure correcting codes, and the packet delivery rate of RSDC is theoretically derived over Rayleigh fading channels, using density evolution. Based on the analytical results, the maximum sleep probability can be obtained while keeping the packet delivery rate (PDR) arbitrarily high. Furthermore, numerical results show that RSDC achieves higher energy efficiency than the conventional protocol via computer simulations.
