Magnetic Pulse Seam Welding of Al/Cu Sheets using 6 -Turn Flat Coil

(in English) The effective welding of Aluminum (Al)/Copper (Cu) is one of the technical problems to be related to Li-ion batteries in electric vehicles. In this study Al/Cu sheets are welded by magnetic pulse welding. The sheets are overlapped with a gap between them and fixed on a 6-turn flat coil. When a discharge current from a capacitor bank passes through the coil, a magnetic flux is suddenly generated around the coil. Eddy currents are induced in the overlapped sheets and electromagnetic force acts on the Al sheet nearer the coil. This sheet is collided to the Cu sheet and welded without fusion and high quality Al/Cu welds are obtained. The bank energy required for this welding was less than 0.6 kJ and the peak discharge current was 25 kA.
