[Invited Talk] Deployment of smart meter communication system

(in English) TEPCO Power Grid Inc. (former transmission and distribution department of Tokyo Electric Power Company) set a target for 27 million smart meters installed by 2020, and started to deploy the smart meters from April 2014. The main purposes of introducing smart meters are to respond to the electricity market reform in Japan, and electric power business innovation using advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) for automatic meter reading (AMR) and remote control. The deployment area of smart meters varies from residential area to underground shopping center, and to mountainous areas. Three types of communication system (920MHz wireless multi-hop, mobile phone, and PLC) are appropriately selected to suite the environment. As a result, high coverage rate and rapid deployment have been achieved. Wireless multi-hop which is the most deployed type has limited power (20mWatts). In order to form multi-hop communication network, utility pole-mounted concentrators or other smart meters should be within the radio range.
As of the end of June 2016, about 6 million smart meters and 45,000 concentrators are installed, and the connection rate reached about 99%. In this session, we introduce the overview of smart meter communication system, adopted technology, the current trend of connection rate, and our efforts to challenges.
