Three-dimensional Imaging of Magnetic Nanoparticle Distribution Using Multi-channel Pickup Coils

(in English) Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) has been extensively studied for in-vivo biomedical diagnosis of cancers. In this study, we develop an MPI system using multi-channel pickup coils with a weak gradient field, which is capable of imaging three-dimensional distribution of magnetic nanoparticles (MNP). As a first step, by using two pickup coils, we performed the three-dimensional position estimation of two MNP samples which were arranged by a spacing of 15 mm. In the experiment, an excitation field with a strength of 1.6 mT at 3 kHz and a DC gradient field with a field gradient of 0.2 T/m were used. A third harmonic signal generated from the MNP samples was detected by two pickup coils, and the samples were two-dimensionally scanned to obtain field maps. Then, the field maps were analyzed using the nonnegative least square (NNLS) method to reconstruct a three-dimensional distribution image of the MNP samples. It was shown that the positions of the two MNP samples were estimated with good accuracy. We also performed simulation on MPI when the number of pickup coil is increased. It is shown that the accuracy of the position estimation can be improved by using five pickup coils.
