An Impact of In-Network Caching on Energy Saving for ISP Networks

(in English) Internet traffic is increasing year by year, and is expected to be double of that of 2016 in 2020. It is also estimated that the energy consumption will grow even faster than the traffic increase. Related studies show that introducing distributed cache servers in a telecommunication network is effective to reduce the traffic by applying an optimal content allocation calculated by a genetic algorithm (GA). However, it is still unclear how these studies work in a realistic network. This paper investigates an impact of placing caches in a realistic network from an aspect of energy consumption. We model an ISP-like network with cache servers and evaluate its performance. Evaluation results show that contents allocation by GA and a greedy algorithm can reduce the total network energy around 53% and 44%, respectively.
